Charging

In the first post of 2008, Adrian asked what my theme of the year was, and provided a link to The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. It outlined the different ways we map resolutions for the new year. In my reply to Adrian, I promised a post on my theme for 2008 but the past month and half were quite hectic; I let myself get swept up in endless waves of errands and festivities but kept this promise on the sideline.

I’m not good at keeping resolutions—I only do what needs to be done, e.g. do relatively well for exams, and pass the leftover resolutions to the next year. In this way I have incurred a huge backlog of resolutions that keep nagging at me, hence this year’s theme, after much consideration: Take charge.

It’s simple and what I need to achieve goals independent of others and circumstance:

  • To stop being led around by the hand by things I cannot control, and instead try to find spirit and purpose within.
  • To do what my heart has been nagging me about: follow passions and make them work somehow.
  • To gradually bring that castle in the clouds onto solid ground—a good foundation is so important.
  • To take charge, really, and stop whingeing about missed opportunities.

Coincidentally, on New Year’s Day Matthew invited me to draw a card from his Tarot deck that would signify my theme for the year. It was the Wheel of Fortune, which is symbolic of harnessing momentum to realise possibilities and develop opportunities. My year has begun well so far, having met a few people who have taken interest in my work and I hope it continues to go from there.

What are your resolutions/themes and how well are you keeping to them?

i admire your resolutions, they’re so noble and something we should all strive towards. i had one resolution and broke it four days into the new year: quit drinking soda.

Wow, I visited the Happiness Project, and spent almost an hour there just browsing and reading. The whole idea of it is so inspiring.

I don’t make resolutions during New Year’s — I simply want to *live*. Instead, during the year when situations call for it, I’ll make resolutions then. :)

One of my resolutions was no eating out during the week. I kept up with it for the first month, but broke it in February. But it’s Sunday, so that’s a new week and I think I’m going to try again.

I resolved to love less, write more and be on time; and so far the last one is really hard to keep :)
