And Then Some: Start of Semester Edition
One: Delayed Realisation
Was in this week’s seminar for The Gothic today, participating semi-actively in the discussion about an eighteenth century Gothic novel, when I mentally took a step backwards and realised: This is what we do. Metaphorically tear books apart, read between all the lines and try to construct or discover a book’s theme. What it wants to say to us. This is really about a love of books and reading. It took me two years and some but I’ve finally realised why I’m an English major: I enjoy books and I will not show up unprepared to class not even having read the entire text.
Two: Books and Film
There are enough books to read each semester for class so I haven’t had time to venture out of the reading list. Having seen two great films that have been adapted from books, I’m keen to read The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and Everything is Illuminated. I wish I made more effort to discover books as I’ve always felt that reading books after first watching them on film is quite lazy.
Three: Vraiment?
Need to start acting like a French major and stop speaking English in class.

Diving Bell was wonderful… and it made me cry like crazy.
I need to read No Country For Old Men after being blown away by the movie.

Re: #3
Some people in my Spanish class infuriate me. They’re like, “Donde esta el booko?” and I’m like, head. desk.

@ Steph: I love the soundtrack too! It was the perfect accompaniment to the quirkiness of everything.
@ Marianne: I’ve just watched No Country and the ending was a little ambiguous for me. Probably because I couldn’t decipher the accents half the time.
@ Cici: Lol, el booko! I embarrassed myself yesterday as usual by saying “leather jacket for bikers” when I actually meant “tailored jacket”.

I want to see Everything is Illuminated pretty much only because Liev Shrieber directed it.

I’ve never been able to get into reading books. I’ll go to the library and pretend to take out books, but I’ll never read them. I guess I associate this thing with being intelligent + books. But I am intelligent without the books.

Yes! Everything is Illuminated is awesome! I watched it about 2 years ago, and my playlist now is peppered with the saner tracks from Gogol Bordello (the guy who plays Alex) and I’m reading Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (or is it Extremely Close & Incredibly Loud? Or the other 2 permutations? I never had good memory) which is by the same author, and it’s a bit like Italo Calvino meets Mark Haddon. If you think Everything is Illuminated is cheating try EL & IC or IC & EL or… you get the idea.
I sometimes still wish I was an English major. =/
